Adverse effects of antiretroviral therapy

This line of research explores the mechanisms behind the toxicity produced by antiretroviral therapy. We analyse functional responses using both in vitro cellular models and in vivo animal models. Our main objective is to analyse the role of the mitochondria and cellular and molecular mechanisms in these actions in the hope of being able to determine the safest combinations of these drugs. We focus in particular on the following areas:

Inflammation in the gastrointestinal trac t

We study the mechanisms that regulate the inflammatory response associated with different physiopathological and pharmacological circumstances in the gastrointestinal tract.

Currently we have two projects underway:

Relevance of hypoxia in the inflammation associated with the gastrointestinal damage induced by Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our main objective is to analyse the role of gene expression induced byHypoxia- inducible factor (HIF) in epithelial cells and inflammatory cells in damage/repair mechanisms in the mucosa.

Regulation of the inflammatory process by gastrointestinal hormones whose secretion increments in inflammatory conditions of the digestive tract. Our main objective is to characterise the effect of gastrin on the function of cells involved the inflammatory/immune response and the relevance of these effects in processes such as Helicobacter pylori infection and cancer of the colon.
